Patentamt is the common name for the centralised German Patent Office. It was originally established in 1877 as the Kaiserliches Patentamt and became the Reichspatentamt in 1919. After the Second World War it was renamed to Deutsches Patentamt (1949), and at the same time took over all the functions of the former Reichswarenzeichenregister (RWZR). After German reunification in 1990 and the subsequent integration of all former East German registrations, it was finally renamed into Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt (DPMA) in 1998.
