The Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt, abbreviated DPMA, has been the central German patent and trade mark office since 1998. It was previously known as the Deutsches Patentamt, which had been responsible for patents and trade marks since 1949, when the former Reichswarenzeichenregister (RWZR) was dissolved.
