The planned expansion of the Unidentified Marks section was finally approaching completion as I had finished creating the data templates holding the mark description and related information. Eventually, a truly searchable database would be possible. I know some people say this should be easy, but two companies that approached me on the matter had already failed miserably in the end.
However, the idea was put on hold when my web host wanted to update the installed PHP versions. They told me that they saw no problem with my content, but not everything worked out as planned. The only part of the site that I did not script myself was the search engine and the creator of that, on the other hand, had been pushing the limits of very old code.
I reached out to their support team and was told that I had previously paid for support from company [Y], but that they now belong to company [Z]. As an old customer of company [Y], I would receive a one-time offer to buy the programme (and support) again (!) at a discount of 80 dollars. This came with a test version of the "newest" scripts with an indexing depth restriction, which turned out to be the same old PHP codebase that does not work anymore, as mentioned.
Clearly, they were attempting to defraud users by making them pay again for a product they had already purchased, without even providing a usable version. A quick background check shows that the 'new' company [Z] had a bad reputation due to fraud allegations. Go figure.
All this got me thinking. I have been pondering making the site more mobile-friendly for some time now, given that the possibilities have greatly improved. As well as re-scripting the site, I could improve search terms and streamline a few areas. I will start by going through my notes on errors and corrections and perhaps adding one or two new factory entries.
I have finished creating an information sheet and optimised the folder/file structure for the Canister Sets subsection, which covers the series, producers and distributors of antique and vintage kitchen canister sets. For now, it will be available on an ask-me-for-info basis, and will later be made available to site members. It currently contains information about 130 different sets, some of which have multiple patterns.
Take care, wherever you are !
