Businesses in Germany have never been required to register their marks, which is why many remain undocumented to this day. Over time, this has resulted in a great deal of nonsense being created by collectors or sellers, either to make their collection more interesting or to artificially raise its perceived sales value. In cases like the following, there is an additional factor: the two names "Tettau" and "Trettau" are often confused or mistyped. The former is a city famous for its porcelain factory (Kgl. priv. Tettau), while the latter is a brand found on redecorated items created by an unidentified business that is not affiliated with the town of Tettau or its factory.
We can dismiss the many claims that Trettau was a true manufacturer, since the items were actually produced by various factories, including well-known businesses such as Edelstein or Gerold Porzellan. As the general period of operation is unknown, the shown marks cannot be precisely dated, although a rough estimate ('between 1955 and 1970') should cover them all. According to some sellers, the business in question "specialised solely in etched gold decorations" (ÄTZGOLD), which is far from the truth, as many items only received a gold transfer pattern or basic gold trim. From a certain point onwards, names such as "Brigitte" or "Wilma" appear to describe the body shape, while numbers (e.g. "500", "502", "1005", "1010" or "1017") appear to stand for the pattern used.
Sadly, that is all we can say, even after over 20 years trying to put this one to rest.
