A cover-up mark may hide some of the original producer's mark for various reasons. Cover-ups were commonly used by decoration studios, and also by retailers or souvenir shops, albeit not as often. Such marks are notoriously difficult to identify as registration of marks is not mandatory, and much information is lost over time.
As you can see here, attempts to cover up the original mark were not always successful, with parts of the mark remaining visible. It has been proven that STW redecorated items from various producers, including Bareuther (Waldsassen), C.M. Hutschenreuther (Arzberg), L. Hutschenreuther (Tirschenreuth), and Schumann (Arzberg). STW apparently added the Bindenschild mark in an effort to create a Royal Vienna vibe. However, it is clear that the decorations are neither Viennese in style nor hand painted; transfer images and gilt were used instead. Some STW items carry a warning in form of an underglaze text reading "This product to be used for ornamental purposes only - could be injurious to health if used for serving food.", which sounds a little rough around the edges but gets the message across.
