The terms handbemalt and handgemalt are interchangable as far as the general idea of 'hand painted' goes. The difference is minute: while the more commonly used 'handgemalt' refers directly to 'painted by hand' (with reference to the decoration itself), 'handbemalt' stands more for 'painted upon by hand' (with reference to the item). In this context one often finds the respective noun Handmalerei, 'painting by hand'. Handgemalt should not be confused with Handverziert.
